Soft Christmas Peppermints (Old-Fashioned Butter Mints)

Creamy, melt-in-your-mouth, and full of holiday charm—these little mints are an old-fashioned classic that never goes out of style!

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk

1 tsp peppermint extract

3 cups powdered sugar

1/4 tsp salt

Red gel food coloring (optional)

Granulated sugar (for rolling or dusting)

Instructions

  1. Mix
Beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy. Add the sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract; mix well.
  2. Combine
Gradually add the powdered sugar and salt. Stir until the mixture becomes thick, soft, and slightly sticky—like a moldable dough.
  3. Divide
Split the dough in half. Tint one half with red gel food coloring and leave the other half white.
  4. Shape
Roll each color into thin logs. Twist the two logs together, then gently roll to combine. Cut into small cubes or shape into rounds.
  5. Dry
Place the mints on a parchment-lined baking sheet and allow them to air-dry for 6 hours or overnight until firm on the outside.
  6. Finish
For a sparkly touch, roll each mint in granulated sugar.
  7. Store
Keep the mints in an airtight container at room temperature. They stay soft and delicious for days!
